American science lecturer, botanist, geologist, medical doctor, chemist, microscopist, numismatician, politician, and science fiction author. Invented the first practical microscope to enable binocular viewing of objects through a single objective lens. Collection contains: notes on electricity, geology, botany (Washington County, OH), chemistry, astronomy; advertisement for book on silver dollars; memoranda, notes, calculations; reference to authorities in reference to Orrin Lindsay's two voyages to the moon and Mars (Riddell published a science fiction story giving an account of a fictional former student named Orrin Lindsay, who travelled to the moon and Mars).

John Leonard Riddell, physician, biologist, and inventor, was born in Leyden, Mass., Feb. 20, 1807. In 1835 he was appointed professor of chemistry and botany at Cincinnati Medical College, and published his "Synopsis of the Flora of the Western States". He received an M.D. degree in 1836 from Cincinnati Medical College. He then went to New Orleans as professor of chemistry in the Medical College of Louisiana, where he worked throughout the rest of his life. In New Orleans he also became melter ...
